Position Description

The DNA Learning Center (DNALC) of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory has an immediate educator opening, as we expand our metro New York operations to a new location in Wayne, New Jersey. The full-time position will be at the new DNALC at Passaic County Biotech Innovation Center in Wayne, located on the campus of Passaic County Technical Institute and adjoining a campus of Passaic County Community College. The 6,500 square foot facility will have two teaching labs, a research lab, and a computer classroom.

The successful candidate will become a member of a small, influential group recognized worldwide as a leader in creating and disseminating new methods in genetics education - including the fields of molecular genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, and data science. Position Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include:
provide hands-on genetics and molecular genetics instruction to precollege students visiting the DNALC for academic year field trips and summer camps;
- deliver in-school lab instruction;
- train and manage high school and college interns;
- mentor extended student research projects;
- conduct teacher training; and
- develop new teaching labs.


Position Requirements

Ph.D. in the biological sciences is required. Recent Ph.D. graduates and postdoctoral scientists who would like to pursue a passion for teaching are strongly encouraged. The position demands a motivated self-starter who can work independently and as part of a team. Excellent writing, computer, and communication skills are required. Demonstrated experience in teaching and/or science outreach is desirable. Skills related to our work as a National Science Foundation center for advanced technological education are also important: DNA barcoding, metabarcoding, nanopore sequencing, synthetic biology, DNA sequencing, and bioinformatics.
Intensive training will take place at DNALC locations in Sleepy Hollow, Brooklyn, and/or Cold Spring Harbor. Flexible scheduling will require some weekend work and occasional teaching at the Brooklyn or Sleepy Hollow facility.

The salary range or hourly rate listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation that may be offered to a successful applicant for this position at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future. When determining a base salary and/or rate, several factors may be considered as applicable (e.g., years of relevant experience, education, credentials, and internal equity).
