Job Description

Zoetis Reference Laboratories (ZRL) is currently seeking a full time veterinary clinical microbiologist to oversee the Microbiology Services for the national ZRL network of laboratories (multiple US locations). Zoetis Reference lab is a division of Zoetis Global Diagnostics. Responsibilities of this role will include medical oversight of the national Microbiology and Molecular services, including oversight of medical aspects of technician processes, training and execution, development and periodic review of SOPs, selection of/consultation on equipment and new innovations, and participation in the Quality Management System in order to deliver reliable, high-quality, medically accurate results to customers. Some interpretation of microbiology results as well as consultation with ZRL colleagues and veterinarian customers is also expected. The need for consultation and support of other ZRL departments and Global Diagnostics initiatives may arise periodically, including commercial activities, such as development and/or delivery of educational content to customers and sales associates. A positive, constructive, collaborative, and forward-thinking approach is critical and the Head of Microbiology must be able to effectively participate in and sometimes spear-head cross-functional management initiatives. The successful candidate will have strong leadership skills, a passion for supporting the veterinary community and an ability to be flexible and adapt in this rapidly changing industry. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Medical oversight of the Microbiology Service, ensuring that customers reliably receive medically accurate, high-quality results is the chief responsibility of this role. This entails support of technician training, oversight of SOPs, participation in quality assurance initiatives, and advising stakeholder groups. These stakeholder groups generally include: Quality/Medical leadership, Clinical Operations (responsible for managing personnel and execution of processes), Technical Operations (responsible for equipment management, building training programs, competency testing, and validations), Commercial (test menu, marketing materials, customer education) and Customer Success as needed and related to microbiology.
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry standards, Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines, other relevant professional organizations as warranted, the veterinary regulatory environment, and foster a culture of continuous technical improvement.
  • Active participation on the ZRL Medical Leadership Team, including contribution to strategic decisions that pertain to improvement, innovation, quality practices and internal and external promotion of the laboratory.
  • Liaise with customers, customer service, and other customer-facing stakeholders as medical subject matter expert when consulting on customer needs with a goal of improving processes and customer experience.
  • Support of cross-functional projects internal to ZRL and the Global Diagnostic organizations.
  • Assist in development of the microbiology team in conjunction with the clinical operational team, which may include cross-functional involvement in recruitment and hiring, periodic performance evaluation, professional development, and engagement in the clinical service.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative relationship within the microbiology team and between those team members, all ZRL colleagues, and Global Diagnostic colleagues.
  • Facilitate opportunities for continuing education, mentorship, and participation in laboratory improvement initiatives or other projects for technical colleagues, as appropriate.
  • Support standardization of equipment and processes relevant to microbiology and ensuring that all quality standards are met, including approach to and management of select agent identification, handling, and reporting.
  • Identify and implement ways to improve the service and/or resolve problems, including the development, validation and publication of new assays and techniques.
  • Assist in growth and expansion of ZRL and the development and support of point of care microbiology as opportunities arise.
  • Participate in and contribute to the quality assurance program, new test suggestions, and new test validation across ZRL.
  • Participate in continuing education and other commercial events for our customers. The size and scope of these events is variable and can include local, regional, and national events.
  • Provide special project leadership and consultation for LIMS improvements, Quality Management System implementation, laboratory expansion, analysis of data metrics and resulting action items, etc., as needed.
  • Consult on molecular testing best practices and coordination with subject matter experts at third party labs to ensure quality test results for ZRL customers.
  • May be asked to serve as primary medical lead/subject matter expert for development of in-network molecular testing (e.g., PCR).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • DVM (or equivalent) required
  • Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of on-the-job experience in the veterinary microbiology field required
  • Experience managing or performing molecular testing preferred
  • PhD, masters degree or other advanced degree in related field preferred

PHYSICAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position is remote, however periodical travel is required on occasion.
  • Able to work hours on a computer and tolerate computer screens, including for video conferencing.
  • Able to physically tolerate microscope work, including ability to extend arms/hands and perform rotating movement, and prolonged sitting.
  • Ability to effectively conduct phone calls and communicate in person.
  • Occasional required movements may include bending, kneeling, crouching.
  • May be required to lift, move, carry up to 25 lbs.

The following base pay range reflects the anticipated base pay for this position if a selected candidate were to be located in (Colorado). Base pay may vary based on location and other factors.

Base Pay Range: $134,000 - $193,000
