Role Summary

The Senior Research & Development Chemist will provide technical expertise and lead the development and qualification/implementation of new (and maintenance of current) products for our global acne, skin care, medical device, and OTC products. This is a hybrid role working on the Hero Cosmetics/Mighty Patch Brand within the Corporate Global R&D Department of Church & Dwight.

As the Sr. R&D Chemist, you will be responsible for formulating stable, innovative, global formulations across a diverse product portfolio worldwide. You will also be responsible for troubleshooting current, unstable formulas and providing a resolution. You will report to the Director of Product Development at Hero Cosmetics with a dotted line to the Product Development Director at Church & Dwight.

This ideal candidate will be well versed in cosmetic formulation development such as anhydrous formulations, suspensions, emulsion technologies of W/O, O/W, W/O/W etc, and OTC acne development. Expertise in SPF, hydrocolloid technology, eczema, and skin care cosmetic products.

This role is ideal for someone who cares about what ingredients are in the bottle and is excited about making efficacious formulations with innovative textures for our customers. What You'll Do

  • Create cosmetic formulations such as anhydrous formulations, suspensions, emulsion technologies of W/O, O/W, W/O/W etc., and OTC acne formulations from scratch.
  • Actively develops commercially feasible skin care and OTC formulations to meet Product Development's aesthetic and formulation specifications.
  • Determines and optimizes stability of the formulation and to ensure commercial feasibility.
  • Collaborates with internal departments, external manufacturers, and ingredient suppliers to deeply understand, identify, and recommend raw material and formulation performance technologies to influence product performance, claims, launch campaigns and product superiority.
  • Lead R&D product testing activities to help guide formulation efforts.
  • Follows projects from ideation to prototype development, to scale up.
  • Provide technical direction and insight for formulations and raw materials to the Product Development, Innovation, Claims, Legal, Regulatory and Marketing Teams.
  • Work closely with CHD R&D, PD, Packaging, Commercialization, Claims, Regulatory and Legal to ensure all developmental milestones are achieved and on time and within budget.
  • Works with legal and regulatory teams to create IP strategy plans for new technology portfolio to sustain our competitive advantage.
  • Selects the most appropriate technologies to create innovative products with leading consumers benefits, while considering the technology challenges and its readiness for the brand.
  • Transfers new technologies to the pilot lab and manufacturing sites, and partners with process engineers to provide guidance & expertise to manufacturing operations.
  • Ensures that documentation for new OTC and non-OTC products is in compliance with federal and international regulations.
  • Creates, updates, and maintains electronic product specifications. Assemble product Bundle Book/ Design History Files, and relevant documentation to support launch of new products and other essential product development tasks as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree strongly preferred in Chemistry/Chemical/Mechanical/Materials Engineering, Biochemistry, or related disciplines
  • M.S. and/or Ph.D. preferred
  • 5+ years of laboratory experience in skincare, formulating anhydrous suspensions and emulsions required
  • Expertise in SPF, hydrocolloid technology, eczema, and skin care cosmetic products is highly desired.
  • Experience in OTC or acne preferred
  • Leadership skills in developing long-term vision, strategies, internal and external innovation programs, external relations as well as supervision and advocating the importance of the team's contribution to corporate business and culture.
  • Basic understanding of FDA rules and regulations
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks with minimal supervision
  • Loves to stay abreast of skincare industry guidelines, raw materials, new technologies and testing methodologies
  • Strong organization and collaborative sills; enjoys wearing many hats
  • Ability to develop, organize and prioritize tasks within assigned projects and work with supervisors to manage assigned projects.
  • Ability to work on multiple, concurrent projects without manager oversight
  • Possess strong organizational, work planning, and problem-solving skills. Understand SBU business environment and make positively impactful decisions to project teams.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor junior staff

Working conditions

This is a hybrid role with the ability to work remotely and onsite at the Church & Dwight Princeton, New Jersey office and occasional visits to the Hero office located in Soho, NY.

Compensation
The expected compensation range for this position is between $116,000 - $136,400.
Bonus based on performance and eligibility; target payout is 6% of annual salary paid out annually.
