Job Description

Position Summary:

The Process Engineer located in Pitman, NJ works hands-on with customers from different industries. Unlike a traditional process engineering position in a manufacturing facility that makes products within a certain family, a process engineer at Coperion is exposed to new processes weekly. These processes include production of technical polymer compounds, electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries, recycling of post-consumer/post-industrial plastics, and many more in the polymers, chemicals, food, and pharmaceutical markets. The process engineer will engage directly with customers to design and conduct pilot-scale experiments in our on-site Extrusion Laboratory and apply learnings from these tests to design and configure production-scale machinery. The typical cycle lasts 2-3 months from initial contact to test report completion. Occasionally, the engineer will be responsible for field support or startup of a machine that was sold from a test. In this role, you are a key component in helping the Company toShape What Matters For Tomorrow.

Work You'll Do:

  • Plan tests by working closely with customers and other Coperion associates to achieve the appropriate technical results. Test planning requires the use of all available technical references (test reports, independent research, customer's commercial experience, etc.) Review test plans with Manager, Process Engineering, or designated supervising engineer. The tests should be planned to identify critical engineering data during test runs for scale-up to commercial size installations. After testing, evaluate results for customer's objectives and internal studies in Coperion's laboratory. The process engineer must also properly supervise lab personnel and pilot plant facility during tests. The expected test load is 15-20 per year.
  • From known objectives, prepare a properly detailed flowsheet and initiate purchase or design of necessary equipment. The flowsheet should clearly identify all significant items required to execute the test plan safely and accurately.
  • Promptly write test reports after each test, stating objectives, data, and conclusions of test. Test reports should also include specific recommendations for any further lab testing or commercial installations.
  • Acts as liaison between customers, associates, and leadership to answer questions or concerns regarding company policies, practices, regulations as they relate to the testing environment, keeping informed of safety requirements as established by Coperion Safety/Environmental Coordinator and good engineering practices. Use this information to promote compliance with Coperion lab practices by their own compliance with regulations.
  • Convert/scale-up test results (if required) into full process specification for sales to quote a commercial system.
  • Review control procedures as required in conjunction with customer.
  • Develop the appropriate information with customers input for proper shipping and disposal of all materials generated during testing, keeping manager and Process Lab personnel informed about the state of equipment in process laboratory and propose changes or corrections to be made.
  • Perform other related tasks, including troubleshooting customer processes over the phone, process related field service calls with travel to customer's sites, attending conferences with the opportunity to present on behalf of Coperion, and teach topics at ZSK101 - our quarterly extrusion training class.
  • Continue professional education by participation in Professional Societies and other career related organizations.
  • Travel: ~25%; Work hours are subject to customer needs and may extend beyond normal workday hours.
