The Lab Assistant, Genomics is responsible for specimen handling, ordering, and triaging of specimens for inpatients and outpatients. This role provides assistance to physicians and nurses regarding appropriate specimen collection. This role ensures all specimens are identified properly and accessioned with accuracy. This role provides support to the technical sections.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Laboratory Assistant, Genomics at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

1. Maintains Accession Logs.
2. Prints and distributes travel documents and labels according to SOP.
3. Ensures reports are appropriately mailed, faxed, and / or copies distributed.
4. Answers phone calls and accurately answers questions or receives and relays messages. Provides assistance as necessary.
5. Understands and navigates the most used functions of the Laboratory Information Systems.
6. Ensures that specimens are received and accessioned properly.
7. Reviews patient demographics and uses the required patient identifiers to ensure accuracy. Obtains any missing or discrepant information required for testing.
8. Ensures department is appropriately supplied and checks supplies and reagents on hand for expiration dates daily. Submits orders as needed.
9. Maintains specimens and slide storage.
10. Ensures blocks and original materials are returned to the proper department/laboratory and documents all activity associated with the returns per SOP.
11. Follows established laboratory safety practices.
12. Completes required training as assigned and meets all deadlines of completion.
13. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
14. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs.
2. Strong organization skills with attention to detail.
3. Ability to maintain professional demeanor and relationships with team members from all levels of an organization.
4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
5. Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

1. Associates degree or some college in related science.
2. Hospital, university, or private Lab experience as a Lab Assistant or other related lab experience.
