Job Description:

We are currently accepting resumes of interest for Part-Time, Forest Ecology Intern for the Science & Engineering Department.

The Forest Ecology Interns will be responsible for data collection for ongoing research on forest ecology in central and northern New Jersey. Data will be collected on the structure and composition of forest vegetation throughout the state, and comparing forests of different ages, habitat types, and landscape contexts. Research is focused on the effects of overabundant deer, invasive plant species, land use and other factors on forest conditions, and the benefits of different tools for forest restoration. Interns may also assist with installation of deer exclosures, street tree and botanical inventories, microclimate monitoring, invasive species removal and/or other related projects.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

Plant species identification.

Measuring forest structure and composition, including trees, shrubs, lianas and herbaceous vegetation.

Collecting data on associated environmental variables (e.g., slope, aspect, canopy gaps, microclimate, etc.)

Recording and entering data in MS Excel.

Deer exclosure installation and maintenance.

Invasive plant species removal.

Literature review and scientific report writing.


Requirements:

Proficiency with scientific literature databases and internet searches.
Must be willing to work in harsh physical conditions, including hot/cold temperatures, buggy conditions, and difficult terrain.
Must be willing to commit to 1-3 regular days of work a week.
Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
Must have own vehicle, and a valid and clean driver's license.
Must be able to move materials and lift 25 lbs as needed.
Current students must be in good academic standing.

Ability to accurately identify plant species of the eastern U.S. preferred.
Field research experience in forest ecology preferred.
Proficiency with MS Excel and Word preferred.


Additional Information:

Hourly Rate: $15/hr, 1-3 days/week
